Exiled. Forced to find a new home, not knowing for how long. When a man moves to a new world, a new city, and a new culture abruptly, even violently, everything has to be discovered and mapped out. Personally, a new world has to be created within an established and thriving city. This new personal world needs to have the fundamentals like food, shelter, and people, but beyond that, when a man has dreams and desires, he must also find the materials and path to create and realize those dreams.
My Maps is the visual representation of this story. A charting of the process of going from the basics beginning with houses he stayed in, movements in the city, people he met, and then moving deeper to how he utilizes those ingredients and experiences to foster creation and realize himself and his dreams in the city. The maps illustrate the process of creation from materials which fueled inspiration or maybe inspiration fueling the search for materials, to creation to exhibition and sharing.

My Maps (the CDMX22 series) is a series of 9 abstract maps of Mexico City (100x100x10cm canvas) with some of them offering mural extensions (up to 300x220cm). Each "map" has been created with different raw materials (wool, metal, wood, cotton, acrylic/tempura/watercolor,...) in the classic heterogeneous, new/used and contrasting style of the artist, Miriam Al-Gamal.

Exiliado. Obligado a encontrar un nuevo hogar, sin saber por cuánto tiempo. Cuando un hombre se traslada a un nuevo mundo, una nueva ciudad y una nueva cultura de forma abrupta, incluso violenta, todo tiene que ser descubierto y trazado. Personalmente, hay que crear un nuevo mundo dentro de una ciudad establecida y próspera. Este nuevo mundo personal necesita tener lo fundamental como comida, refugio y gente, pero más allá de eso, cuando un hombre tiene sueños y deseos, también debe encontrar los materiales y el camino para crear y realizar esos sueños.
My Maps es la representación visual de esta historia. Una representación gráfica del proceso de ir desde lo básico, empezando por las casas en las que se alojó, los movimientos en la ciudad, la gente que conoció, y luego profundizando en cómo utiliza esos ingredientes y experiencias para fomentar la creación y realizarse a sí mismo y a sus sueños en la ciudad. Los mapas ilustran el proceso de creación, desde los materiales que alimentaron la inspiración, o quizá la inspiración que alimentó la búsqueda de materiales, hasta la creación y la exposición.

Exilé. Forcé de trouver un nouveau foyer, sans savoir pour combien de temps. Lorsqu'un homme s'installe dans un nouveau monde, une nouvelle ville et une nouvelle culture de façon brutale, voire violente, tout est à découvrir et à cartographier. Personnellement, un nouveau monde doit être créé au sein d'une ville établie et opérante. Ce nouveau monde personnel doit disposer des éléments fondamentaux comme la nourriture, le logement et une vie sociale, mais au-delà de cela, lorsqu'un homme a des rêves et des désirs, il doit aussi trouver les matériaux et le chemin pour créer et réaliser ces rêves.
My Maps est la représentation visuelle de cette histoire. Il s'agit d'un diagramme du processus qui part de l'essentiel, en commençant par les maisons dans lesquelles il a séjourné, les déplacements dans la ville, les personnes qu'il a rencontrées, puis en approfondissant la manière dont il utilise ces ingrédients et ces expériences pour favoriser la création et se réaliser, lui et ses rêves, dans la ville. Les cartes illustrent le processus de création, depuis les matériaux qui ont alimenté l'inspiration ou peut-être l'inspiration qui a alimenté la recherche de matériaux, jusqu'à la création, l'exposition et le partage.
